Description

This is a module that will introduce students to the key academic theories and concepts that have shaped our understanding of journalism from a historical and modern perspective. The module is delivered through a programme of lectures, seminars and appropriate assessment designed to familiarise students to key literature and academic research in journalism and media studies. It will focus on the history, organisation and current concerns of news media and their role in politics and society in a national and international context. It provides a forum for discussion of the concepts that inform the analysis of journalism, including its contribution to democracy, the relationship between politics and journalism, the significance of media ownership, the influence of technology on traditional media and current journalistic practice, changing news audiences and other contemporary challenges to journalism worldwide.
